Blue Demon E309L Stainless Steel Covered Electrodes
E309L-16 stainless steel stick welding electrodes are ideal for joining stainless steels to themselves or to carbon and lo-alloy steels. Carbon content in the weld metal is held to .04% max which gives it increased resistance to intergranular corrosion.
Typical Applications:
- Dissimilar Metal Joining: The most common use is welding stainless steel to mild steel or low-alloy steel. The high alloy content in the 309L prevents the weld from becoming brittle when diluted by the carbon steel
- Buffer Layers (Buttering / Buffering): Used as a "transition" or "underlay" layer when applying a corrosion-resistant stainless surface onto a carbon steel base (surfacing)
- Difficult-to-Weld Steels: Sometimes used for welding high-hardenable steels where cracking is a concern, as the weld metal remains ductile
- Exhaust Systems: Frequently used in automotive manifolds and industrial exhaust transitions where stainless components meet carbon steel flanges
